Flight of Fancy

Here's some development work for my independent animated short, Vol de Fantaisie / Flight of Fancy. It's my wierd little homage to my time in Paris, when I felt so free. Check out the animatic on Vimeo! http://www.vimeo.com/11050459

Pretty Ugly

Every so often I feel the need to do a grotesque (usually when I'm sensing the onset of cuteness-induced diabetes.) After all, fairy tales are often quite scary. Monsters and witches and wolves - Oh my!

Cinderella

I love the Cinderella story and the Art Nouveau movement; this piece let me geek out over both.

Here's my value study...

...color study...
...and the final. On the panels around the fireplace, I included some references to the original Grimm's Cinderella. There's the tree that bestows the dress, the birds who help Cinderella sort lentils from the ashes, and the spirit of the departed mother watching over her girl.

Drawing from Life

Looking back over my sketchbooks, I see that I'm at my best when I'm consistently drawing from life. I don't get to draw much in school, so I sneak in weekend studio sessions and constant little excercises my sketchbook.

The Illustration Academy

The Illustration Academy was quite an experience: intense, but enriching. I was stretched and challenged, and came away with some nice pieces. Here are my favorites.

This was created as a mock cover for "The Audence" arts annual. It's my nod to the immortal Gibson Girl: still stylish after all these years.

It always bothered me that illustrations of Jack's beanstalk never included any beans!

This was painted in response to C.F. Payne's challenge: depict a conversation using pictures only.

Here's my take on Abigail Williams from Arthur Miller's The Crucible. She is one shady lady.
